OUT OF PLACE ongoing archive > SATURDAY 7 MAY 2016- 6pm>

In this archive a contribution of mine will be presented as well

Out of Place_an ongoing archive is a project conceived by Associazione 22:37 that began in 2013. This new phase of the project is initiated together with the newly formed Berlin-based association Peninsula.  The purpose of Out of Place is to collect a range of materials, mainly quotations, publications and images, related to the concept of contemporary nomadism. The purpose of Out of Place is to create a temporary archive housing a broad overview of theoretical references and ideas about nomadism and its effects on the forms of contemporary art production. The core of our research is based on the idea that being ?out of place? is a condition that causes a subject to continuously re-locate himself or herself.

RELATIONAL RUBATI are evolving beside and in-between what is already there. They intensify in free interpretation which appears to us as echo, shadow or trace.  Slipping out of motion, fishing in asynchronity, non-idiomatic jumps among interlaced structures. RELATIONAL RUBATI transform apparently existing parameters with the awareness that only the process of deviation itself brings them into reality ? as long they refer to their fixed-point.How will these new perspectives change our awareness of a seeming reality?

The installation RELATIONAL RUBATI links to the insular architecture of the Milchhof Pavillon and takes this as a starting point for my site specific artistic research. This investigation of various layers of reality and order systems, clashing on the enclosure of the housing, reflects the revelation of their impact on time/space dimensions, inside/outside situations and social contexts.  The term rubato originates in music and describes a phrase of flexible tempo with slight speeding up and slowing down and a rhythmic freedom of expression within a piece.  By using  objects, text, visual media as well as audio and performative elements. My observations will translate into a narrative texture of spatial relations alongside of this conception. The installation changes during the duration of the exhibition and can be visited on-site.

Constructing Virtual Archives. The GI Press Project: history, lessons learned, and their application to other projects

Präsentation und Diskussion mit Dr. James Lewes, visiting researcher at the International Institute of Social History, Amsterdam, NL

Moderation: Anita Mage, Historikerin & Philosophin (in englischer Sprache)

Over the last five years James Lewes has built the largest digital collection of materials produced by and in support of American servicemen who chose to stand up and oppose the American military?s involvement in the Vietnam War.
While some of the behaviors exhibited by these servicemen were not unique to the Vietnam War, but have been found in most the wars in the twentieth century, the fact their actions were publicized in hundreds of self-published newspapers was unique. It is these that James Lewes has collected and digitized.

The talk will address three separate but related issues:

1. How to identify and track down materials using the abundance of library catalogs that are available online

2. How individuals or groups outside of institutional frameworks can raise adequate funding for such projects.

3. How to network with the holding institutions for research access and collaborative publication of results.

|| James Lewes studied commmunications and cultural studies at the New School for Social Research (BA 1988), University of Pennsylvania (MA 1990),  University of Iowa (PhD., 2000). Dissertation on the GI Underground Press: Protest and Survive: GI Newspapers during the Vietnam War (Westport, CT: Praeger, 2003). Senior Researcher on the documentary film Sir! No Sir (2005, Director: David Zeiger) and Web designer for Displaced Films (2004-2009). Founded the GI Press Project in 2009 to digitize, preserve, and make accessible GI underground newspapers. Artist Organisations International

Initiated by Florian Malzacher, Jonas Staal und Joanna Warza

Artist Organisations International (AOI) explores a current shift from temporary, precarious art projects to long-term structures of engagement built by artists. The economic crisis, the global erosion of civil rights through the so-called ?War on Terror? and the massive rise of social movements have demanded new models of structural participation from politically engaged artists. The shift from the working model of the project to that of the organisation no longer reduces artistic engagement to the singular figure of the author but expands its scope and influence ? for example by creating new forms of educational and community structures, non-parliamentary groups, liberation movements, unions or even political parties.

The three-day congress ?Artist Organisations International? brings together over twenty organisations, founded by artists, confronting the current crises in politics, economy, education, immigration, and ecology. Lectures and discussions will provide concrete insight into their methods, profiles and goals.

A live-stream of the entire congress will also be broadcast online at www.artistorganisations.org.

For commentary on Twitter, please use the hashtag #AOI.
All events are held in English.

TANZFABRIK BERLIN // Emotional Spaces // showing 17.12.2014  // 21:00 STUDIO // Wedding 3 Uferstr. 23 / 13357 Berlin

Admission free

Participants of the performance project "Emotional Spaces" led by Joris Camelin and Matthieu Burner are showing results of their work

This research aims to free ourselves from the habits, the recurring patterns and the social behaviors we project into our actions. We will begin from an emotional perspective, questioning the border between performing and not performing to trigger notions of nothingness and vulnerability. We will engage our physical and emotional sensitivity and openness in a dialogue with the surrounding space including the architecture, audience and colleagues. We will focus on questions such as: How does one recognize and use the gaze of the audience while acknowledging the emotional frictions induced by a direct confrontation with the 'other'? How does one transform triggered emotions into an energy that allows us to explore and play with the present moment? How does one subdue his/her/here own ego in order to work with the space and people around them? In this workshop dance as visible event is not the goal. Dance as a vector of an emotion, of a tension between performers, observers, and space that is managed in real time. What would it mean to work on ways of sharing more than showing?

||| CROSS TALKS 4 |  (VISUAL) REVOLUTION OF THE MAIDAN: between Russian colonialism and Ukrainian nationalism

a lecture with Liza Babenko | screenings and further public discussion   (in English language)

The lecture and screening of Liza Babenko?s documentary learning films will be dedicated to the ideological, polity-economical and visual analysis of the Ukrainian Maidan revolution from the internal perspective. We will touch upon post-colonial and national reasons of the initial non-acceptance of this revolution by the South and Eastern parts of the country. Position of the Ukrainian ?Other?, which historically belonged to the Crimea and Donbass, will be problematised as an post-colonial evidence of broken into several national identities country. Besides, based on the researches of Ukrainian journal of social criticism Commons, Liza Babenko will discuss the necessity of actualization in nowadays post-Madian Ukraine such philosophical categories as nationalism, patriotism, fascism, national identity politics, post-colonial ressantiment and politics of memory concerning the Second World War. With the help of all this discursive instruments, but not only, we will try to understand the roots of the current war in Eastern Ukraine, except of the obvious Russian invasion and media propaganda. Also, we will look through such results of Maidan revolution, as activation of  Ukrainian right-wing forces and regular change of the local oligarchic elites. All that will made us to raise the final question : whether the whole Ukraine, together with all its variety of national identity types, was needed in social revolution, but not in national one? And what is the political future of East European region in general?

||| Liza Babenko is an emerging  researcher, author, artist, curator. Born in 1988, Ukraine, Babenko took her MA program in Philosophy of Culture at the Russian Anthropological School of the Russian State University for the Humanities (Moscow) and BA program in Cultural Studies at the Kiev-Mohyla Academy (Kiev). Among her recent activities there are graduation of the Victor Misiano?s  Moscow Curatorial School ?Doing Exhibitions Politically? (The V-A-C Foundation and What, How and For Whom curatorial collective), co-curating of the Feminist Workshop in collaboration with Boryana Rossa in the fridge & Haspel (Sofia), residence at the Centre of contemporary art  Uyazdovsky Castle and participation in ?Commentators? exhibition within the Katarzyna Kozyra Foundation (Warsaw).  Her last research and directing work is learning play "Energy of Cosmos Is Indestructible!!!" in collaboration with Anton Vidokle, Research Congress ?Former West: Documents, Constellations, Prospects? at Haus der Kulturen der Welt (Berlin)  http://www.formerwest.org/DocumentsConstellationsProspects/Contributions/EnergyofKosmosisIndestructible and co-working with the Russian experimental film director Svetlana Baskova (?There Is One Decision: To Fight). She is publishing in numerous magazines, among which there are ArtUkraine, Korydor, Springerin, Colta.ru, etc and constant contributor to the Ukrainian journal of social criticism Commons. Currently she is holding a fellowship from the Goethe Institute Ukraine and shooting her first feature-length learning film about the Ukrainian revolution and state war. She lives and works in Kiev.

||  "Maidan: The Lost Revolution"  video, HD, 28'39, Kiev, 2014 This short video is a documentary chronicl? of one of the many days lived by the author on heroic Maidan in 2014.Frozen panoramic plans alternate with the scenes from the everyday and already recognizable political as well as aesthetic reality of this one Ukrainian protest. But today, re-looking at all of these massively replicable visual images and ideological rhetorics of Maidan, we can try to imagine what was this revolution for residents of the East and South Ukraine, who did not accept neither the form nor the content of Maidan from the very beginning. In the midst of the war on Donbass we can also try to put for ourselves on the following questions: why this form of Maidan was so unacceptable for the other part of the country? Moreover, which type of revolution would unite Ukraine, but not split it up?

||  "Banderovite",  video, 12?18, Kiev, 2013 This short documentary video was filmed in a working-class neighborhood of the Lukyanovska area in a time of winter Maidan in Kiev. At that time everything in the country was focused on the preparing for preterm elections to the parliament. The main character is representative of the Western Ukraine nationalist organization UNA-UNSO, which is close to the right-radical views Ukrainian party "Freedom and ?Right sector?. Such people are called by the Russian chauvinists and Russian-speaking residents of the Eastern regions of Ukraine ?banderovites?.  However, our hero is not a typical Ukrainian nationalist, but rather marginal, trickster of this revolution, agitating against all the corrupted parties and oligarchic candidates. At his campaign tent taking pace a dialogue with the passers-by. During the dialogue it become clear, that Maidan protesters are also quite different in their ideological positions, and that if fact they do not have uniting all of them political program, except of the will to expel the president V.Yanukovych. At the same time, for some Maidaners V. Yanukovych is "lesser evil" of Ukrainian politics, than ?all the rest?. In conclusion, ?banderovite??, who is critical towards Yanukovich as well as to his opposition, is blamed in the breaking the opposition and collaborating with the president. But in fact, is it right?

Monday, 20 October 2014, 6 pm ///Haben und Brauchen (To Have and To Need) would like to invite you

Please turn now. Or else: It's straight into the wall!Presentation and public discussion of the concept for a long-term dialogue process between independent and institutional agents of the contemporary art scene and the Berlin Senate ZK/U ? Zentrum für Kunst und UrbanistikSiemensstraße 27?4910551 Berlin

Since 2011 Haben und Brauchen demands an open cultural political dialogue about the situation and future of the production and presentation of contemporary art in Berlin. With the formation of the Jour Fixe Bildende Kunst upon the recommendation of the Council for the Arts in November 2013, and with the commissioning of Haben und Brauchen and bbk berlin to develop a dialogue concept, the Senate Chancellery for Cultural Affairs began moving down a path toward dialogue.

As part of a closed weekend retreat in mid-February 2014 three working groups took up their tasks and developed over the last months?with the participation of agents from other initiatives as well?three elements for a long-term and nonpartisan dialogue process about the crucial issues in the thematic fields of work, city/space and notions of art. This process is supposed to complement and further the urgently required adaptation of existing funding models in the visual arts.

Finally, a draft was created that describes the key points of social and cultural city development from the perspective of artists living in Berlin, explicates backgrounds, and above all proposes a multi-leveled procedure that includes a diversity of agents of contemporary art, groups and initiatives active in urban, social and cultural policy as well as political representatives and other senate departments.

On 20 October, we will present and publicly discuss the concept paper sent along with this invitation, while hearing the response to it as well as the plans of the Secretary of State for Culture, Tim Renner.

With amongst others: Sonja Augart, Stéphane Bauer, Leonie Baumann, Daniela Brahm, Jochen Becker, Wibke Behrens, Dellbrügge & de Moll, Discoteca Flaming Star, Matthias Einhoff, Tatjana Fell, Joerg Franzbecker, Nora Gatewood, Erik Göngrich, Michael Hauffen, Jörg Heidemann, Gabriele Horn, Philip Horst, Çağla İlk, Karl Heinz Jeron, Kerstin Karge, Sabine Köhncke, Hannah Kruse, Bernadette La Hengst, Heimo Lattner, Regina Liedtke, Herbert Mondry, Ute Müller-Tischler, Marie-José Ourtilane, Tim Renner, Christian Römer, Birgit Schlieps, Florian Schmidt, Michael Schultze, Heidi Sill, Ingrid Wagner, Marc Wohlrabe, Ina Wudtke, Moira Zoitl.

GRUPPENAUSSTELLUNG GlogauAIR  |  14. März bis 03. April 2014

"The 6.000 artists and the 400 galleries make Berlin to the city with the highest density of galleries in Europe and one of the most attractive places to create art. Therefore, designers, agencies, lifestylemagazins, fotographers and trendscouts - are drawn to this young city which burst with fresh vibes. "

(Berlin Senate, www.berlin.de/projektzukunft/english/creative-industries/; wording as in the original)

Presenting the city as an international hotspot of art, Berlin authorities, in admirable English prose, highlight a tendency that has shaped Europe over the past years: the transformation of arts into creative industries. In view of the quantification, standards, hierarchies and superlatives of artistic practice that this shift has brought about more than a million proposes to put in the center of focus the wishes ? knots ? riots ? density ? overthrows ? ethics ? global english ? attraction ? life ? freshness ? void ? vibrations ? difference ? gaps ? flurry ? popcorn doggybag ? sounds ? ages ? questions ? brutalism ? hate ? secret ? clumsiness ? touch ? taste ? shakiness ? signs ? burst ? third-person-s ? waves ? naiveté ? blurry ? asides ? holes ? involved in the experience of art.

more than a million is an investigation in the very concrete and sensorial aesthetic, ethical and technical frames of contemporary art. 6 artists - Mario Asef, Marisa Benjamin, Tatjana Fell, Stephanie Gerner, ST&ST, Natalia Irina Roman - show their works and open up interspaces in between the economical, social, gender-based statistics and norms of the contemporary art field creating an atmosphere of unique, open, material and freshly vibrating experiences. Everybody is invited to /not/ question the common and individual values and criteria of art experience challenging the in/official canon and one's in/scrutable taste.

||| on the challenges of cultural organizations artists in Arab countries and Germany

WEDNESDAY 6th NOVEMBER 2013   |   2pm  - 6pm

The round table is proposing a debate around the actual situation of the cultural independent institutions in the Arab countries and in Germany:

  • the role, the challenges, the future, especially in light of the political and economic changes and the impact on the work of cultural institutions,
  • their role, their sources of funding,
  • their management and funding models and its relationship with the society

Together with you we would like to discuss  the challenges of the cultural institutions and artists in the Arab countries and Germany. The aim of the round table is to exchange and share the ideas and practical experiences among the Arab and German participants, in an attempt to compare the situation or to find common ideas and cases, and this will be through comparing different and varied models of management and financing mechanisms, also the relationship with the community and with the state.

The round table raises the following questions:

  • What are the challenges of the cultural work in the current stage ? And how they can be met?
  • How the mechanisms of funding of arts and culture can be developed?
  • Is there a change in the role of artists and cultural institutions in the light of the political changes?
  • What is the ideal model of the relationship between the independent cultural institutions and the community (society) ?
  • What is the ideal model of the relationship between the independent cultural institutions and the state?

| | |  GROUND SEARCH -  from relational space to space relations

12 October 2013 Saturday 18:30

Tatjana Fell, quests the ?space?, in the new space of PASAJ.

PASAJ  Independent Art Space
Banker street, Galata | Istanbul

PASAJ, as a continuation of PASAJist will host its first event of the season, except Sheila Pepe?s work, ?F7 Mola Yeri? during Istanbul Art International. To talk about Tatjana Fell?s work of art and to get together after a long break, we wait all of you in our new space of action.

With GROUND SEARCH ? from relational space to space relations, Berlin based installation artist Tatjana Fell quests the constitution and appearance of space as well as concepts of general positioning. Her art work as well as her network projects magnify transformative systems, systematics and situations, overlaps, fringes, borderlines and their correlations with individual and political action. Instead of extraction, division and singularity she investigates the values of intertwinings and cooperation during her long term exploration. PASAJ invited travelling artist Tatjana Fell to open up her recent projects and research fields for a presentation and discussion.

BLANC ZONE  -  The Poetry of Limits

OPENING  ///   Friday 22 March 7pm - 10 pm
PERFORMANCE & TALK  ///   The Nature of Limits  ///  Saturday 06 April 8 pm  (in German Language)
FINISSAGE  ///  Saturday 20 April 7 pm - 10 pm
ORT /// Galerie Axel Obiger  /// Brunnenstr. 29 /// 10119 Berlin

They start not with Bachelard, Lefebvre, Heidegger or Hölderlin, nor with Hannah Arendt or Platon.
They start with themselves and each other, with an investigation of the obvious, the always existing and inescapable enclosure,
the inside and outside of one's own existence, the persona, the artist.
They do not work as they usually do, from context to text, from the periphery towards the center, nor on interfaces of cultural, political, social fields together with its protagonists - towards the terra humanum
There is creation out of nothingness, deriving colour from white, from transparency temporality, from finitude of language order and from the interaction of the tonus of movement and resistance ? the noise creates the sound of surrender or hope and reflects what oneself touches and feels.

Conceived as work in progress, the artists decided within this installation for a process of negotiation, collaboration and a
common expedition to places of limitation and perforation, retracing edges, cuts and overlaps to sense and look at ?
in order to detect the value formed within ? beyond the accustomed negation of dividing, seceding, secluding.

Born in Colombia, Fernando Niño-Sanchez mainly thematizes impressions of cultural diversity and works on an aesthetic level
about social acculturation processes and confrontations with visual realities. Tatjana Fells work is reflecting and analyzing zones
of transmission, hierarchical structures, systems of valuation as well as connotations and their effects and opens passages for interaction.
Tatjana Fell's and Fernando Nino-Sanchez's custom built installation, which has been concieved specifically for
Axel Obiger, operates via a network of relations and metaphors which will be revealed to visitors by active interaction.

The work FROM SCRATCH_a collective text_always for scratch is twofold. One part of the work comprises an installation in the physical exhibition space in Amfissa, GR. The installation is made up of 5,000 photocopies of a text with beginnings of scenarios for collectivity, 5 black metal electric fans which are switched on, the air current generated by the fans, a video projection and imaginary sound. The second aspect of the work is the collective process of continuing the elaboration/"construction" of this text.  The collective process of continuation/"construction" of this text takes place in the virtual space of a blog on the internet. It is an operation whose overall control does not rest with any single agent.

The artist and theorists participating in the collaborative construction of the text are so far: Hakan Topal, Susanne Bosch, Hypatia Vourloumis, Sibylle Hofter, Panos Kompatsiaris, Hariklia Haris, Efrosini Protopapa, Berkay Tuncay, Tatjana Fell, Ilgin Seymen, Julie Miller, Alice Burns

Out of Place_an ongoing archive is an open and continuously upgradable archive, which was established with the aim of providing an overview of the widest possible range of theoretical references and ideas concerning the concept of nomadism in relation to the forms of contemporary artistic production The installation contains around fifty documents sent by artists, critics and curators who have made their contribution to the first corpus of the archive. Behind the project is the idea that being out of place is the condition which enables a person to continuously reposition himself in one place. This process, not only physical, it is necessary to build the constantly changing sense of our presence in the space. The visitors will be asked to contribute actively to the construction of the archive by participating directly in the cataloging and indexing of the various contributions present in Out of Place. In this way, as a guest desired, the archive will find its temporary location within ArtVerona.
